Senior Full-Stack Software Engineer

Employment: Contract-to-hire or contract initiallyWork Arrangement: Remote — United States only; Washington, DC/Maryland/Virginia (DMV) area preferred.

Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. Modular IT does not currently provide employment visa sponsorship for this position.

Position Overview

Modular IT is seeking an experienced Senior Full-Stack Software Engineer to lead the continued development and production launch of a next-generation personal finance and cash-flow planning application.

The application is designed to go beyond traditional expense tracking and budgeting by providing users with greater visibility into their current financial position, upcoming obligations, financial goals, and future cash flow.

An early working application and product architecture already exist. The selected engineer will evaluate the current codebase, help establish the production architecture, complete core application capabilities, implement secure cloud services and multi-device synchronization, and help take the application from prototype through beta and production release.

This is a hands-on engineering role. We are looking for someone who can make sound architectural decisions while also writing secure, maintainable, production-quality code.

Key Responsibilities

  • The engineer will take technical ownership of the application and work directly with the product owner to translate product requirements into a secure, scalable, and maintainable product.
  • Review and assess the existing codebase, database model, APIs, and architecture, and recommend improvements needed for production readiness.
  • Design, develop, and maintain the application’s frontend, backend APIs, database architecture, and core financial capabilities.
  • Evolve the existing local application into a secure, cloud-hosted, multi-user platform supporting desktop and mobile users.
  • Design and implement account, transaction, recurring financial activity, financial planning, and forward-looking cash-flow capabilities.
  • Implement secure authentication, authorization, data isolation, cloud synchronization, backup/recovery, monitoring, and other production security controls.
  • Develop and maintain data import capabilities and establish an extensible architecture for future third-party financial integrations.
  • Establish automated testing, database migrations, CI/CD pipelines, and development, staging, and production environments.
  • Optimize the application for responsive web/PWA use and support eventual iOS and Android distribution.
  • Identify and remediate technical debt, security vulnerabilities, performance issues, and architectural risks.
  • Produce maintainable technical documentation and participate in ongoing architecture and product-design decisions.
  • The engineer should be comfortable working on interconnected financial capabilities rather than isolated CRUD screens and should understand the importance of data integrity, security, forecasting logic, and user experience in a financial application.

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of professional software development experience, including demonstrated ownership of production applications.
  • Strong experience with Python and FastAPI, Django, Flask, or a comparable backend framework.
  • React, TypeScript, or a comparable modern frontend framework.
  • PostgreSQL and relational database design.
  • SQLAlchemy or equivalent ORM and database migration tooling.
  • REST API design and integration.
  • Authentication, authorization, OAuth/OIDC, and secure application development.
  • Docker/containerization.
  • Git and pull-request-based development.
  • Automated unit and integration testing.
  • CI/CD and production deployment.
  • Azure, AWS, or GCP.
  • Responsive/mobile-first application development.
  • Strong understanding of multi-tenant data isolation, encryption, secrets management, API security, backup and disaster recovery, secure logging, production monitoring, and software vulnerability management.

Strongly Preferred

  • Microsoft Azure and associated application, database, identity, security, and monitoring services.
  • Progressive Web Apps and/or Capacitor.
  • iOS and Android application packaging and deployment.
  • Financial technology, personal-finance, banking, or other applications involving sensitive financial data.
  • Financial aggregation platforms such as Plaid, MX, or Mastercard Open Finance.
  • Financial transaction processing, categorization, or recurring-transaction detection.
  • Cash-flow or financial forecasting.
  • Loan, payment, interest, or amortization calculations.
  • Secure handling of sensitive consumer financial information.
